WHAT IS “SEXUAL ASSAULT”?
Sexual assault is any type of sexual activity or contact that you do not consent to. It can happen through physical force or threats of force or if the attacker gave the victim drugs or alcohol as part of the assault. Sexual assault includes rape and sexual coercion.
In an ideal world, understanding what is going on within yourself, and knowing how to defend yourself is really important nowadays.
There are a lot of factors to consider for you to be physically and mentally prepared during a high risk situation. Keep in mind that even when you take all the necessary precautions to protect yourself and stay safe, you still may not prevent rape.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM RAPISTS
1st: Be aware of your surroundings at all time
If you are alone in an area and you noticed that someone is following you, start making a noise. Talk to an imaginary person or pretend that you are talking to someone on your phone. The louder the potential victim, the more the predator loses its confidence to do the assault.
2nd: Avoid dark and isolated places
If you are on your way home or going to some important place, always stay under well-lit lights. Walk in place where people tend to be around. Make sure you know the safest ways to walk from place to place.
3rd: Be mindful during social situations
Do not leave your food or drink unattended. Most predator tend to mix some drug to make their victim lost their consciousness. Always be responsible to avoid unwelcome attacks.
4th: Carry defensive items
Carry weapons that could hurt a potential attacker like taser and pepper spray. Always make sure that you know how to use the defensive item that you have. Rape whistle can also be used to draw attention.
5th: Draw attention to yourself
Disrupt the idea of how the attackers will implement their attack. Yell, shout, and fight hard as you can. The rape whistle has the capacity to emit a high pitch siren like a car alarm when you pressed its button.
WHAT TO DO DURING AN ASSAULT
- During an assault, aim for the straight lines which are the easy targets. Eyes, nose, mouth, throat, solar plexus, breasts (if a woman), stomach, groin, knees, and instep.
- Use your knee to deliver a sharp upwards blow to the groin area of the attacker.
- Whatever you have on you can be used as weapons. Learn how to improvise.
- Scream, kick, and punch. Make sure you get noticed if you get attacked in a busy atmosphere.
- Your elbows are strong part of your body also. If the attacker grabs you, use blunt force to deter.
Always know that your natural instinct can save your life. It is like a radar that can prevent serious problems so do not ignore and pay attention to it. If you feel that there is a possible danger about the person or your surroundings, always take immediate action.
Rapists do not necessarily look like criminals. They could look very normal. They could be the very person that you interact every day like your boss, your teacher, your neighbour, boyfriend or girlfriend, or even your relative.
